Nine Steps to Financial and Retirement Success

Over many years of working with people to help them get to, and through, retirement, we have seen the same themes come up again and again. These nine steps reflect the things that most consistently make a difference to long-term financial outcomes.

Over the years, we ran a series of seminars around what actually makes the biggest difference to people getting to, and through, retirement in good shape. These nine steps came out of those sessions and the conversations we still have with clients every day.

They are not a checklist to be completed once and forgotten. Most people move back and forth between them over time as their circumstances change.

If you focus on just two, start by being clear about your goals, and make a habit of reviewing your plan as life changes.

You can explore each of the nine steps in more detail below.

Set clear goals

Manage spending and reduce high-interest debt

Investment returns and interest rates matter

Spread your investment risk (diversification)

Protect your assets and income

Use legal and tax structures effectively

Have fun — with discipline and patience

Seek good advice
If it looks too good to be true, it usually is

Regularly review your plan
